I am pleased and grateful to have been afforded this opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors.  A lifelong resident of Sarnia Lambton, I grew up in a Family which placed a high value on service to our Community. I am blessed to have three wonderful daughters with three outstanding son-In-laws and enjoy Papa status with three precious grandchildren - Gracie, Lachie and Lily and one more on the way.
My educational background included achieving Degrees in Physical Education and Education from the University of Western Ontario. It continued with a career in Education which included Classroom and Administrative experiences. A great deal of learning was realized in the robust relationships shared with students, staff and parents in nine school communities throughout Sarnia Lambton. Lifelong learning is a passionate priority for me.
My experience as a Director of Sarnia Bay Marina for a decade was incredible. Along with running the day to day operations in meeting the needs of our Seasonal members, Marketing initiatives designed to entice people to come visit our Marina and Sarnia Lambton were a priority. I reached out to the business community to collaborate in  “ hooking ” visitors to experience the extraordinary value of what we all had to offer. From the Community perspective, I have recently been or am currently involved with the Muskoka Woods Student Leadership initiative, Diabetes Camp Fundraisers, Municipal Election as a  Campaign Manager,  a Director/Chair on the Blue Coast Primary Care - Physician Recruitment and Retention Board and as a volunteer and a Board Member on the Theatre Sarnia Governance Committee. Coaching Girls’ Travel Hockey for seventeen years was busy and delightful. I garnered an interesting and most memorable positive perspective as to Theatre Sarnia experience in my participation in acting roles in five Productions including Annie, 42nd Street, Crazy for You, Jacob in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat and War of the Worlds . One realizes, directly, the formidable
commitment and huge talent, on and off the stage.
I am driven to passionately give back to a Theatre and a community which has given so much to me.

I am thrilled to be putting my name forward as a candidate for Theatre Sarnia’s Board of Directors. Over the last 20 years, I have been involved in many productions both on and off the stage of the Imperial Theatre. In addition to being a performer, I have also served backstage in various capacities (props, curtains, mics etc) and have developed an understanding that productions are bigger than any one person: “It takes a village”. I was involved in the early 2000s, when Theatre Sarnia struggled to fill seats. And since then, it has been exciting to watch, and to be a part of its growth and revitalization. This has led to cutting edge technical developments, innovation and sold out shows, drawing audiences from across the province. I would like to be a part of this continued success as a board member. In terms of personal attributes, I am a team-player with an optimistic approach to challenges and problems as they arise. With over 2 decades of experience in local theatre I have also developed a clear sense of audiences, and the types of content / shows which tend to work (and not work) in this unique city. As such, my depth of experience could be a valuable voice at the table when it comes to decision-making. And finallyas an educator, and lifelong learner, I also bring with me a keen willingness to learn. I do not claim to have all the answers, but I am excited by the prospect of learning the inner workings of Theatre Sarnia at the Board level. Places everyone!

Joyce Veenstra
Joyce Veenstra
+ -
My name is Joyce Veenstra. I am married, have 3 married adult daughters and 2 grandchildren. I have lived in Sarnia for 12 years and have enjoyed becoming part of this community. During my 29 year career in Long Term Care, day programs for the elderly and senior’s apartments I learned valuable skills regarding financial management, human resources, policies, communication and team work. Some of my past volunteer experiences over the years include the Inn of the Good Shepherd, Circles out of Poverty, Rebound, church positions and Victim Services.
I have always been a patron of the arts – taking my kids to Toronto 20 plus years ago to see The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables along with trips to the Stratford Theatre and London’s Grand Theatre. During the pandemic, we missed our Imperial ‘date nights’ and eagerly looked forward to being welcomed back to experience again all the theatre has to offer. I value The Imperial as an integral and contributing asset for the Sarnia community.

I have been involved with the arts community in Sarnia Lambton since my teen years with Talent Ltd
(Northern high-school’s drama club). I later moved to Ottawa where I studied Theatre Arts at Algonquin College. Afterwards I was offered the opportunity to help run my family’s Insurance Brokerage in Brights Grove. I have now been a third-generation broker and
financial security advisor for the last 18 years. I feel I'd be a particularly good fit for the board as I did serve for about a
year on the board for the Lawrence house about 10 years ago. Also coming from a business back ground I am very analytical and detail orientated. I have been involved in multiple shows with Theatre Sarnia since 2013. The theatre will always be a love for me and bringing arts to our community is very important. In 2019 I shattered my leg so I haven’t been involved in much since then. Well, that and the combination of the pandemic. I am now looking to help as much as I could. I am co-producing The Little Mermaid as well in the upcoming season. The theatre has always been my happy place and want to do what I can to protect it and help many others share in that same love.

Mark is happy to be returning to the Theatre Sarnia board this year for his second year. He is currently in his first year of law school at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and is thankful to have the opportunity to keep the arts in his life as he pursues a legal career in family law and litigation.

At Windsor Law, he is the editor-in-chief of the student publication Headnotes as well as a project lead for Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC). Mark grew up in Sarnia and has fond memories of being on the Imperial Theatre's stage as a cast member of Hidden Talents. He has a Bachelor of Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and was a musical theatre actor in the vibrant Toronto arts scene for several years. He also covered the Toronto opera scene for Opera Canada Magazine and enjoys writing arts and culture stories. Mark returned to Sarnia in 2020 and took a job at the Inn of the Good Shepherd as a not-for-profit coordinator. He was promoted to homeless shelter manager and worked to provide service to The Inn's clients with dignity and compassion; he credits his experience at The Inn as a large part of his decision to attend law school.

Mark sees the theatre as a crucial hub for exploration and discovery, specifically for young people. The youth programming at Theatre Sarnia is of particular interest to him as he believes it to be an essential outlet that requires a strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

Following retirement from the Petrochemical industry in 2000, I sought volunteer opportunities within Sarnia.  My initial contact was with the Pathways Health Centre for Children, subsequently working in the pool for a number of years alongside children with varying disabilities. I also served on the Pathways Board of Directors for some 11 years.

In 2001 I happened to pass the Imperial Theatre Box Office and asked if there was an opportunity to help...suffice to say I was helping in the Box Office the next day !

I have continued to volunteer each Friday to this day, having assisted eight successive Box Office managers, each with their own unique approach to customer service..

As time went on I became involved in a relatively minor way with Theatre Sarnia productions. Not wishing to appear on stage, I have handled both lights and sound on various productions including two WODL Festival productions at Owen Sound and Woodstock.
Wishing to further the development of Theatre Sarnia and the Imperial Theatre, I have served on the Board of Directors for three elected terms and one appointed period. During this time due to the collective work of the Board, Theatre Sarnia has transitioned from a purely community theatre to a well organized business venture with substantial assets and a high performance standard.

As part of the Board mandate, I have served on the Governance Committee and currently on the Finance Committee following a two year period as Treasurer.
